For example, the butt stock on the Yugo AK family of weapons cannot be interchanged with the Russian AKM or Modern AK, let alone 90% of all the known AKM variants. The list goes on with a lot of small alterations having been made to the design, it never lost sight of its purpose... To be a heavy support variant of the AK47. So, the basic receiver shape, furniture (concept), and operating system are the same. The \u003cstrong\u003elong stroke piston gas-operating system\u003c\/strong\u003e. The barrel tho, is entirely unique in the AK world of rifles. It is iconically finned or cut discs have been made around the barrel to dissipate heat. On top of having fins, there was also a whole lot more mass in the barrel, twice as thick as a normal AKM barrel. All this was done to use the M72 in a tactical support setting of sustained fire on the battlefield.
